The illustration was created for the third provincial pride march called “FroCiriè”*, organised by the collective “ProvinciaLotta" that took place the 29th of June 2024.
As a collective we intentionally decided to create a design that was considered provocative and taboo by the provincial context of the Canavese and Valli di Lanzo region. For our third provincial pride march we wanted to understand how the Provincialotta** we wanted to portray could be: more mature, informed and fierce.
We were aware that our choice would be troublesome for the authorities in Ciriè and, as expected, it caused the refusal of the patronage by the Municipality of Ciriè.
The council justified their position by highlighting the obscene design and the denigrating name.
As a collective, we see this outcome as a victory in many ways because we finally managed to reawaken a province that was sleeping on these topics, we woke them up from their stupor revealing the provincial backwardness and indolence to the public.
Our stylistic choices come from our shared coherence, from the desperate desire of queer auto-representation, of the re-appropriation of our “obscene” bodies, of the insults and of the disrupting of the patriarchal peace.
*TN: FroCiriè is a play on words, connecting “frocio” (faggot) with the name of the town “Ciriè”.
**TN: ProvinciaLotta, while being the name of the collective, it is also a pun between “provincia + lotta” (provincial fight) and “provincialotta” (simple person who lives in a provence).
